A recent true story highlighting why choosing purely on price, could come back to haunt you
Sadly, what I'm going to share in this article, is not an isolated case so please read to the end, it will definitely be worth your time
Joyce’s £2,900 Lesson: Why Choosing the Wrong Contractor Can Cost You Twice
Joyce didn’t wake up one morning planning to make a bad decision
Like most homeowners, she was simply getting some work done
A general contractor (sole trader) was already in her house, carrying out other improvements, and everything seemed to be going fine
Then, almost as a throwaway comment, she mentioned she’d been thinking about having a media wall built
Nothing formal. No big discussion. Just a passing thought
The contractor’s response was immediate and confident:
“I can do that for you once I’ve finished this job.”
It felt convenient. He was already there. He seemed capable
And it meant one less decision to make
So Joyce said yes
That hasty decision ended up costing her £2,900 more than it ever needed to
The wall looked “okay”… at first
On the surface, the media wall didn’t look disastrous
But as Joyce lived with it, the issues started to stack up
- The finish wasn’t clean
- The lines weren’t straight
- The details felt rushed
And behind the scenes — the things most homeowners can’t see — were far worse
- The framework wasn’t built correctly
- The planning was poor
- The structure wasn’t something anyone could confidently guarantee
It didn’t feel solid. It didn’t feel right. And it certainly didn’t feel like something that would last
Joyce had paid £2,900 for something she was already unhappy with — and deep down, she knew it wasn’t just cosmetic
“Can you just patch it up?”
Before she contacted us, Joyce did what most people do in that situation
She asked around
Several tradesmen were happy to offer a “patch-up”:
- Skim it
- Tidy up the edges
- Cosmetically, make it look better
On paper, it sounded appealing. Cheaper. Faster. Less disruption
But there was one problem
No one was willing to stand behind their 'Band-Aid' fix
Because once the core structure is wrong — once the framework, planning, and fundamentals are flawed — you’re not fixing the problem
You’re simply covering it up
And that’s not something we we're ever willing to do
Why we refused to patch it
When Joyce came to us, we had a difficult but honest conversation
Yes, we could make it look better
But we wouldn’t guarantee it
And if we can’t guarantee it, we won’t touch it
A media wall isn’t just about what you see. It’s about:
What’s behind the plaster
How it’s built
How heat, cables, and load are managed
And whether it will still be safe and solid years from now
So our recommendation was simple — but not easy for her to hear
Start again!
- Strip it back
- Remove the existing wall completely
- Rebuild it properly from scratch
That way, we’d know exactly what we were working with — and we could confidently stand behind it with our unique guarantee
The real cost of the “convenient” choice
Our rebuild cost £4,700
That covered:
Proper design and planning
A correctly built framework
Clean detailing and finish
And a media wall we were happy to guarantee
But here’s the part that still stings
If Joyce had come to a specialist media wall company in the first place, she would have paid £4,700 total
Instead, she paid:
- £2,900 for the first wall
- £4,700 to rebuild it properly
A combined total of £7,600
A costly £2,900 mistake — simply because it felt easier to say yes to someone who was already there
This story isn’t about blaming Joyce. It's important I make that clear
See, Joyce didn’t do anything unreasonable
She didn’t try to cut corners. She didn’t chase the cheapest quote
She made a very typical human decision based on convenience and trust
And that’s exactly why this happens so often
Media walls look relatively simple
Until you’re living with one that's not right
The uncomfortable truth
A general contractor (often a sole trader), may be excellent at what they do
But a media wall isn’t “just another job”
It’s a specialist feature that combines:
- Structure
- Technology
- Heat management
- Electrics (not always but more often than not)
- A professional finish with long-term durability & reliability
And when it’s done wrong, the cost isn’t just financial
- It’s frustration
- Regret
- And that sinking feeling every time you look at it
Choose 'wisely' once — or risk paying twice (like Joyce)
Like I said at the beginning...
Joyce’s story is definitely not unique. We experience things like this far to often
So if there’s one takeaway, it’s this:
The most expensive media wall isn’t the one done by a specialist
It’s the one you have to do twice!
Choosing the right company at the start isn’t about being fancy or overcautious
It’s about:
Knowing what you’re getting
Knowing it’s been done properly
And knowing someone will stand behind it
That peace of mind is designed in from day one
And once you’ve paid to rebuild a wall you already paid for once — you realise just how valuable that is
In closing...
