Great question. Let's start with the short answer first
Unlike most Carpenters who provide a whole host of different services from kitchens, stairs, garden rooms, bedroooms etc, our media wall teams, specialise in 'Just Media Walls'
It's all in the name
This means we have the luxury of having experienced many different scenarios, including potential problems, and know what to expect. That experience also means we fully appreciate the planning involved in doing a full media wall build, and can provide you with an honest and realistic scope of work and timeframe, for completing the job
This in itself is often a key reason why people choose us
Another differentiator is the way we manage our projects. Media Walls tend to require the skills of several different Trades including carpenters, plasterers and electricians but unlike most chippy's who may tend to be working on several different jobs simultaneously, trying to manage all the different subbies, we focus on your project from start to finish, not flitting in and out
We also ensure that all the necessary Trades fall into place seamlessly, resulting in a much more streamlined, efficient, stress free project for you and your family
Now the long answer, and I wrote a full article on it, which you can find here
So do we just offer media walls?
At 'Just Media Walls' yes, we only offer media walls
However, this is just one specialist division within our 'Just Home Projects' business (JHP Group UK Ltd)
Discover our complete range of specialist home improvement solutions here
In most cases, we only work in Southampton and the surrounding areas (Fareham, Portsmouth, New Forest etc)
However, in certain circumstances, we may travel slightly further, as long as the work justifies it. We have more than enough work here so there is no real justification for us to expand our reach
Yes & No, let us explain
Yes we do run multiple jobs simultaneously (simply due to demand) but no, we don't stop and start jobs and here's how we do that
We have dedicated teams on every job and they are 100% responsible for seeing their particular job through to completion, before they start another one
That is non negotiable within our business
Among many other things, we pride ourselves on seeing through every single job, from start to finish, without any unnecessary delays, as we want to give you the greatest possible experience throughout the project
The only occasions you won't see anyone onsite, is if the wall needs time to dry before the next step in the process (for example: plastering)
As with a lot of questions, the answer depends on a few different elements but let us share our standard scope of work, which we have found to be very accurate, so you can gauge each step, according to your own requirements
Day 1-2- Strip existing wall (if necessary). If not, we start the framework immediately. This includes any electrics, plaster boarding (if required)
Day 3-4 - Plastering and building of custom cabinets (if required)
Day 5 - Drying time for plaster
Day 6-7 - Painting (if required)
Day 8 - Ensure everything is finished to the very highest standards, and that you are absolutely delighted with the outcome
In most cases, no. Wherever possible, we do our utmost to fulfil all projects inhouse
However, during times of extensive workloads, when our lead times exceed 3 months, and we know people aren't willing to wait that long, we may consider outsourcing, but here's the critically important part...
We have several partnerships in place, with other specialist media wall providers, who we have personally vetted, and can confirm that their work ethic, quality of work and attention to detail, reflect our own
In addition, because of the work we've given them in the past, they also give us priority on bookings and offer us preferential pricing, meaning you still get a great deal, you enjoy the same super high standards and, you also get to benefit from our unique 'Group' guarantee
For all these reasons, we are perfectly OK with this structure and don't see any downside of this setup
Companies of all shapes and sizes outsource work, even large corporates
The important part is, the intensive vetting process we go through, ensures we're 100% happy allowing our 'partners' to complete projects under our banner and are totally confident that they'll deliver an outstanding project, just like we would if we were doing the work ourselves
One other point as this is something else that gets asked...
If they are as good as us here at 'Just Media Walls' in Southampton, why aren't they as busy? How come they can do the work much sooner than us?
The answer is very simple,
We extensively market our business using strategies I (Keith), have built up and used very successfully for over 30 years so unlike most in the home improvements industry, we focus very heavily on promotion, as well as extremely high standards on fulfilment
Dovetail that in with a fantastic team of specialist tradies, and we have a great mix of 'brain and braun', which is why we often have at least 3 months of committed work (sometimes longer) and others, however good they are, aren't quite so busy
Sadly most others, have gone from being employed, to starting their own 'self-employed' business, whereby they typically spend 99% of their time 'on the tools' and 1% on promotion (nobody taught them about business)
And remember this one final bit for complete 'peace of mind'
It's our reputation on the line so we wouldn't do anything at all to jeopardise that, hence why we're happy to offer this alternative, to people who can't, or aren't willing to wait for our next availability
No FAQ section would be complete without discussions around price and as you've probably guessed, once again, it depends
Let us explain...
There are so many variables in a media wall that dictate costs, these include: (but this list is not exhaustive)
- Size of the wall you want built
- Type of wall - Basic design with just an insert for tv and 1 sided fire, or a totally bespoke build with custom cabinetry, niches, panelling, LED strip lighting, 3 sided premium fire (and everything else in between)
- The size of your TV. This is only relevant to the cost of your media wall, if
A) You're considering upgrading to a bigger TV (which obviously has cost implications that need to be considered)
or
B) You're opting for a fire, and here's why...
Purely referring to aesthetics (not heat output, brand, or how realistic the logs look etc), you typically want the width of your fire to be roughly the same as your TV (not exactly, but similar). Therefore, the bigger your TV, the wider your fire needs to be and in most cases (again not all, but most), the wider the fire, the more expensive it tends to be
- Quality of materials and components have a dramatic impact on cost
For example: You can purchase a fire for as little as £750, maybe even cheaper (but not recommended), or you can go the other end of the spectrum and invest £7500 in a premium solution. It all comes down to budget and exactly what you want to achieve from your new media wall
- Panelling. If you do require panelling, do you want it just on part of the wall or covering quite a lot of the wall, including behind any niches (shelf inserts). Do you want Oak, Walnut or something else?
The options are almost endless but to simplify things, in most cases (not all, but most), we tend to discuss your requirements, then limit the options because too many options tend to just overwhelm. Once we've received your enquiry form, we can often gauge what you roughly want, but at that stage, we also provide some examples to help you visualise exactly what you want
- Custom cabinetry - If you require cabinets to provide additional storage and hide things away, this adds additional build time, which ultimately adds additional cost
In addition, how many cabinets do you want?
Do you want them built using MDF or would you sooner these are built from veneered wood. Again, your decision here impacts the price
- Plastered finish or just MDF. In our professional opinion, a plastered finish is always our preferred option because it tends to provide a sharper, cleaner finish but bear in mind that first, the wall needs to be plaster boarded, then plastered (also bear in mind 1-2 days drying time) and finally painted
- Labour costs vary from one company to another, and that also varies from one trade to another (Chippy, Sparky, Plasterer etc). A one man band (self-employed tradesman) typically will be cheaper than a proper company that has staff and other overheads but on the flipside, a proper company that is Limited, has insurances to protect you and who also provide unique guarantees, may be worth the extra investment
Again, for example: Your electrical requirements alone, can have quite an impact on cost. Sparky's aren't cheap so depending on whether you need additional sockets to accommodate all your devices, specialist modern LED strip lighting to enhance the overall mood of the room, sufficient supply for a fire (if required), all of this adds to the price
Now, considering all the above, just as a rough ballpark guideline, for most media walls built by us, bearing in mind we cover Southampton and surrounding areas (other parts of the country could vary quite dramatically), our builds often come out round the £5k-£10k mark, but in some instances, again, depending on the relevant options chosen above, can come down to as little as £2k
Like we said right at the beginning, it all depends on exactly what you want and are willing to pay
And here's something else to seriously consider, because we totally stand by the mantra,
Price is what you pay, but value is what you get!
So never just make your decision purely on price because there are so many other things to consider
One being whether you want your media wall built by a specialist or generalist, the choice is yours
One more very important point,
When comparing quotes, make 100% certain that your comparisons are like for like because in many cases, they're not. More often than not, it's like comparing apples with oranges
Not just in terms of the points referenced above, but also the overall experience (something we absolutely pride ourselves on, is the outstanding experience you get from start to finish)
In addition, we are so confident in the value we offer, we never discount. The price we quote is our best price right from the outset
The only time our price comes down (if ever), is if compromises have to be made (on your behalf), in which case, elements get removed to try and meet your desired budget
In summary...
The price you pay is ultimately based on your requirements, your budget and the company you choose to go with
Just choose wisely!
We also created a dedicated page relating to costs because it's the most common question we get asked. You can check it out here...
